Some Farmers, activists and MES leaders on Monday protested against land acquisition for a ring road and Belagavi Dharwad new railway line in Belagavi.
They walked with banners and posters from Dharmaveer Sambhaji circle to the Deputy Commissioner’s office. They raised slogans against the state government and demanded that the government drop plans of building the ring road and the new railway line between Belagavi and Dharwad.
Ring road won’t help city to reduce traffic issues, Cities which already have ring roads still suffer from traffic issue. Instead of ring road, build flyovers connecting National Highways said Manohar Kinekar, Former MES MLA.
The land acquisition will lead to the loss of livelihood for many families in these villages as their main source of income is agriculture he said.
Total of 72 km length ring road is being proposed around Belagavi, in which 1372 acres of fertile land of poor farmers will be taken away but not a single acre of land which belongs to politicians. So this ring road should be canceled immediately. Otherwise we will all have to fight against the government, he warned.
Responding to press persons, Belagavi District commissioner Nitesh Patil said that, First of all Ring road land acquisition hasn’t started yet. Initially we see such protests in all cities wherever ring road is being planned, but later when project completes they will realise its benefits. We will work on these projects by taking farmers into confidence.
