Farmers on Tuesday staged a protest at Rani Chennamma Circle in Belagavi against the plans to acquire land for the proposed Belagavi–Hunagunda-Raichur four lane greenfiled highway.
Farmers from Bastawad, Tarihal, Hannikeri, Nagnur etc protested against the plans to acquire fertile farmlands to lay a new greenfield highway between Belagavi-Raichur. They said residents and farmers of the region have already given fertile land for Industries and road works, now we are left with small piece of land for the living, whenever a new project is announced, the farmers are the first to be called upon to sacrifice their lands for development.
Group of farmers submited a letter to Nitesh Patil, Deputy commissioner of Belagavi. They pressed that farmers are set to lose hundreds of acres for the projects carried out by the Union government so need to drop the land acquisition process.
