Accessible India campaign, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 3, 2015, is being implemented under three broad categories — accessibility in public transport (airports, railways and road), public buildings, and information and communication technology

Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) has launched Accessible India Campaign (Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan) as a nation-wide Campaign for achieving universal accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs)

In public transport, the target was to conduct accessibility audit of all domestic airports and convert them into full accessible airports by March 2018, However it was extended till March 2020. According to data provided by DEPwD to Parliament, so far, 55 of 104 domestic airports have been provided accessible features.

Enhancing proportion of accessible airports

An airport is accessible, if a person with a disability has no barrier in entering it, using all the facilities, and boarding and disembarking from airplanes.

This covers the built environment – surfaces, steps and ramps, corridors, entry ways, emergency exits, parking – as well as indoor and outdoor facilities including lighting, signage, alarm systems and toilets.
